Many thanks to those vets who have done some on-farm beta testing, and fed back comments. This software is still available free of charge for unlimited evaluations, in return for feedback.

As a result there is now a “Add New Farm” facility within the app, removing the need to set a client up in advance within the VSR database.

Evaluations can be “locked off” within both app and database and more importantly, can now be “unlocked” to allow corrections and edits to be made by the vet.

“User settings” app screen and a simpler password reset or opt out added within the app.

An optional facility to preset all of the Physical Exam findings to Normal/NAD – useful for instance when you are doing batches of young Pre-sale bulls and the client has already weeded out the inferior ones. Now you only need to input Scrotal Circum and the Result -Satis/Unsatis if he is passes everything else. Results can obviously be edited if needed when the bull is in front of you.

“Reason for Test” (Presale, Prebreeding etc) this will default to the last bull inputted. So if you are doing a run of Pre-breeding evaluations, then no need to select from the dropdown list – all to reduce “finger miles” as much as possible. .

Inclusion of an “Other Physical Anomalies” free text field – for those extras that I have either forgotten or you need to remind me of!

Improved Save/Synch functions, and off-line operation tidied up.

Improved handling of “Favourite Samples” – now defaults to the last sample/count recorded, as this is usually the better one.

Cert Info screen in VSR tidied up – nomenclature made consistent across all the screens and other minor things.

Morpho Counter also up for a rework and ought to be done by BCVA in Oxtober. This will include colour coded by Normal, Compensated or Uncompensated, extra defects and “normal” options with reworked back screens.

And we have fixed several other bugs & oddities while trying (in vain I expect) to second guess all the ways that vets and users will try to break it!

Recently we have run the most significant test days yet- with 86 bulls evaluated over 2 separate days! No problems encountered, and nothing major requested to make it work any better. Big relief and pints to celebrate.

The most significant update we did was to upload all of the bull data – tag, name, breed and dob in advance, so no need to input this info on the day itself – so much quicker, smoother and no typos. The morpho was finished off in the surgery afterwards, and now all the data can be downloaded as a CSV file, analysed and presented to the client in different ways – 86 pdf certs were not required at this stage, but a condensed tabular report with all the important info would be very much more appreciated!

Rolling out to all vets now, so get on and either download the app and follow the registration process or get in touch.

Still a few bugs which we are working on as we find them, and more features to come online.

However there are a few catches. Firstly the Microsoft 365 server is binning emails originating from our mail software – no idea why and the coder is looking for a fix but this is particularly annoying. In the meantime, please use a non 365 email address.

Secondly, until a self registration system is set up – which will be very soon – all users will need to have an email address already set up within the VSR database. This is simple to do, so please messsage / email / WhatsApp me on 00447887887699 in advance.

At this stage I would really appreciate feedback, so do get in touch. Roger

A “Bull Sheet” Forum – When enough vets are registered I would like to develop a forum where we can post problem or interesting cases, and get advice. This may be a separate forum group or within the blog on this website, whichever works best.

In time there will be a potentially useful gallery of photographs built up within the VSR database, which could be made available to all our vets (with identities hidden obviously). These could also feature in the proposed CPD quizes.

These ideas will be developed after the system has been up and running for a season, and we are open to suggestions as to how to best run it

Many of the final features have been added, but still at internal testing stage. Crucially the Certificate section is now being updated – formatting, more reliable links to the fields and the option to select the default sample and morpho count from within the app itself.

Other features coming online are advisory boxes if the vet has forgotten to input certain fields e.g. scrotal circumference, BCS, tag numbers; another advisory dialogue box if the morphology count is borderline which suggests you count another 100 before coming to a conclusion, and the vet only having sight of the total number of sperm counted until 100 is reached, rather than the breakdown and numbers of normal:abnormal.

Coming together, and looking to get out beta testing soon.

We are looking for a number of vets to test The BullApp in the field, and provide feedback. All suggestions will be considered for inclusion before the full roll out. Note that the very first test versions may not have all of the full functionality that is ultimately planned.

I intend to run some “Evaluation quizzes” for both users (and maybe non-users) within the app.
These will be in the form of slides and short videos of morphology, motility and whatever else looks interesting and fun. Users will be notified when a new ”test” is online and of a deadline to complete it. Participants will then be benchmarked against each other, and results made available to the group, but keeping identities hidden rather than naming and shaming individuals.

The purpose is to increase everyone’s knowledge, standardise the work across different vets, practices, etc, while assessing how much we are all singing in tune, or maybe not… And generate some chat while having fun.

There may even be prizes!

“The TupApp” – a parallel system is proposed for recording and reporting your fertility evaluations with rams, and it will be included within the standard package that existing practices are signed up for.

The basic paramenters required for a ram fertility evaluation are very similar to those already within The BullApp and the final certificate will be based on the current Sheep Veterinary Society template.

Feedback at BCVA Congress 2022 was very positive about this feature, and we will begin to upgrade the The BullApp and VSR database software as soon as it completed beta testing. Being realistic this will be available in time for the 2023 ram testing season.
